Featured Bird Blogger of the Week

Howdee all,

Its that time again…Week five of Featured Bird Blogger of the Week. Yippee!

This week I would like to introduce you to Dan Huber of Nature Observances.

I first met Dan a few years ago at one of my Birders who Blog, Tweet and Chirp outings. Dan was new to birding and he quickly racked up many life birds on the outing. Its been fun following his blog and seeing his learning progress when it comes to birding. The second time Dan joined us for a birding outing, his skills were much better and this time I was learning from him!  Dan recently started sketching the birds as a learning tool. Nice! Dan also spends time on Twitter @Docforestal and Facebook sharing his and other birding and nature posts.

Dan is a busy doctor, husband and father and squeezes his birding and nature observances in between his busy schedule. Because of his lifestyle much of his birding is done in his own yard, at his daughters riding school, or on family outings. Dan doesn’t feel the need to go chasing rarities ..he is content with his ” 2-4 foot away views of the more common birds to get to know them more.  The House Sparrows – have you noticed the pretty colors in the wings of these drab invaders?  The small black and red highlights on a Tufted Titmouse.  The fine details of shading/color of a Black-Capped Chickadee -“

Dan proves to me that even with a busy life you can find time to enjoy the simple pleasures  anywhere you are.

Want to know more about Dan..then read Dans interview on Birding is Fun!

I am a Family Physician, married with two children.  I became interested and obsessed with birds in summer of 2007, when I first saw Sibley’s Guide to birds at a park store.  From there, seeing my first Pileated Woodpecker sparked my interest.  I have many books that I use to learn as much about bird biology and ecology as I can.  Doing this and chasing

birds has been tough in my spare time, and is an off and on again endeavor. I have found joy in blogging about my experiences , as well as photography, and sketching.  I think I would be very happy to work as a naturalist if the time allowed.  My thirst for knowledge is unending.

I keep several feeders in my backyard to watch birds when I can’t get out hiking and searching.  My life list is only 247, but I am working on learning more about the common birds first.

I want to include this Kinglet watercolor done by Dans wife as a gift to him. I think we all need to encourage her to do more bird paintings..Isn’t it wonderful?

I hope you enjoyed Dan’s blog and visit often…

  1. Great choice, Dawn! I always enjoy reading Dan’s blog. He’s so nice, and I also like that he’s starting to post sketches of his sightings.

    • Hes a very kind soul…I also love that he shares his sketches..Thanks for commenting Kelly..I think you are the commenting queen..I appreciate that!

  2. I’m with Kelly. There is something really special about seeing a beautiful photograph and viewing the bird through an artist’s eyes. (I don’t suppose I would be biased about that!)
    Great post!

    • I admire those that can draw…I am afraid of how terrible my drawings would be that I don’t bother…Its great when you can throw caution to the wind and just DO IT!

Of course then there are those that are just plain talented they cant help it! 🙂

  3. Dan’s is one of my favorite blogs to read since he lives in Connecticut and is interested in checking out areas that are new to me. He also has interesting viewpoints about birding.
