In 2008 I was lucky enough to visit the Prado museum in Madrid, probably the world’s greatest art gallery – it’s an incredible place. The painting that grabbed my attention most of all was The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch, a three-paneled masterwork painted c1500 depicting The Garden of Eden, the sins committed in real life, and Hell. It blends reality with some of the craziest surreal imagery you could possibly imagine. It also has lots of accurately painted European birds. Have a look in the link below, and especially in the central panel of the painting, and see how many species you can identify (you can zoom in for a closer look):

And check out the pig dressed as a nun in the bottom right corner on the panel of Hell. Pretty mental stuff!
