Mark Avery rocks!

There was a time when the British music charts were filled with harmless yuletide fun every December; when Shakin’ Stevens and Cliff Richard were as important to Christmas as Bethlehem and egg nog. But since the rise of evil Simon Cowell’s X-Factor on ITV, our Christmas charts have been diluted by tepid mediocrity, over-styled teenagers performing karaoke to millions of demented fans. But last year Simon Cowell was given a good kicking by the British public, when the 2009 X-Factor winner was beaten to number one by Rage Against the Machine and their festive favourite Killing In The Name Of, and all through a campaign initiated on Facebook.

With support from the RSPB, the great British public are preparing to stick it to Cowell again, this time with The Trashmen’s 1963 masterclass in idiocy Surfin’ Bird. The RSPB are backing BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills and the Facebook campaign, and conservation director Mark Avery had this to say:

‘It’s all a bit of fun but if it gets people thinking about wildlife at this time of year, and wanting to find out more about it, everyone’s a winner. Most importantly the birds themselves – and they’re the real stars in all of this.’ (Read more on the RSPB’s website)

And if that hasn’t convinced you to buy it from December 12th, then perhaps this cutting edge MTV video filmed by the RSPB at their headquarters in Bedfordshire might work (yes, that is Mark Avery dancing!):
