Monday morning, no blogpost written, what to do? Pager kicks into life and there’s a White-throated Robin in Cleveland at Hartlepool headland. Trapped by ringers and released by the bowling green at 08.30, it then started showing nicely just after 09:00. Apparently ‘only’ a female, but rare birds be rare birds, so let’s not be so sexist. Women can vote now, and in some enlightened countries they’re even allowed to drive a motorcycle.

Found patchily from Turkey through to the western Himalayas, this is only the third British record, the last being 21 years ago in Wales off the Pembrokeshire coast on Skokholm island in 1990.

Blasting westerlies all throughout the end of May, then just a few days of easterlies and look what happens. Very nice.

Here’s hoping for lots of illegal parking, criticism of ringers, inconsiderate DSLR photographers, flushing, fisticuffs, stolen telescopes and a massive row on Birdforum.

And for this you postponed one of our Conference Calls podcasts? And, Jeez, if that image is of the actual bird then I have to tell you that I don’t think it is one…surely the throat shouldn’t look like that???

I wish we had had some of those westerlies at Gambell, Alaska the past week. Incessant easterlies brought us a Dark-eyed Junco and a Pine Siskin!
